Studio 4C and Toyota partner up for Peace Eco Smile

It's not everyday where we see a Japanese animation studio team up with a car company to develop a unique short based on its vehicles. That's exactly what happened when Toyota teamed up with Studio 4°C, which is also known for its short in The Animatrix and Tekkonkinkreet, to come up with PES: Peace Eco Smile. Toyota Motor Corporation will be screening the animation at Anime Expo 2012, which is held at the Los Angeles Convention center, starting from this Friday June 29th and runing until July 2nd.

The premise of the shorts are actually quite nice. An alien named Pes comes to Earth and becomes enamored with a human girl, while also being fascinated by our cars, in this case being Toyotas. It's a somewhat silly premise but one that works thanks to its heartwarming story. If there's one thing for sure, it certainly doesn't feel like you're watching an advertisement for Toyota.

Talk about unique style of advertising. If there is one thing for certain, Toyota knows for sure how to cater to their target demographic. If you happen to be at the Anime Expo this weekend, make sure to give PES a look. Not only will you get to see a unique partnership between car company and animation studio, but you're sure to appreciate the amazing animation that Studio 4°C has done.

YouTube app launches on PS Vita today

PS Vita Image

In the event that you aren't near a computer, don't have a tablet, and never carry a smartphone, you can now watch YouTube videos on your PlayStation Vita. Adding to the Vita's growing portfolio of applications, the YouTube app will be available as a free download via the PS Vita Store on PSN.

YouTube takes advantage of the Vita's impressive 5" OLED screen and 3G capability, while giving you the same features the normal site offers, but on-the-go. Key features of YouTube on the Vita include:

Videos will be available in both full screen or small screen mode depending on your choice. In Full Screen mode, a control panel will be displayed on the screen, which will allow you to easily expand or minimize videos. An HD button will also appear when playing high definition (up to 720p) videos. While watching in small screen mode, you'll be able to view the video while having access to the like or dislike buttons, suggested videos, comments, and information.

"PS Vita was designed to deliver the best high-resolution portable entertainment experience possible," said SCEA's Don Mesa. "We’re very excited to be able to offer the content and applications that are compelling to you, and we looking forward to bringing you more as we move further into 2012."

Earth Defense Force coming to Vita in Japan this September

EDF 2017

Earth Defense Force 2017, the shooter that came to Xbox 360 in 2007, is returning this year as a PlayStation Vita game in Japan.

According to Dengeki PlayStation, the game is slated for release on September 27.

D3 Publisher's new portable version will feature ad-hoc and online multiplayer for up to four players, unlike the Xbox 360 game, which offered two-player local co-op.

No Resistance games planned for the foreseeable future

Resistance: Burning Skies

The recent Resistance: Burning Skies for PlayStation Vita may be the only game in the series fans receive for a while, according to Sony.

Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s online producer Daniel Brooke said they had "no definitive plans" for the future of the series.

Burning Skies was met with mixed reviews (it's holding at 59 on Metacritic), and sales for Resistance 3 were poor compared with its predecessor.

Do you think the series needs a break or a burial?

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection review (PlayStation Vita)

Okay, so we’ve gotten that disappointment aside.  Does that mean that Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is a failure as a result?  Not at all.  In fact, the port accomplishes quite a bit in its own regard, thanks to two classic MGS titles that haven’t skipped a beat, even years after their release.  Some notable extras help too.

The package contains two main games, both which originally appeared on the PlayStation 2 ages ago.  Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty returns Solid Snake to active duty, while also peculiarly bringing Raiden into the mix.  Then you’ve got Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, an epic sequel in its own right, taking place years before with Big Boss making the rounds, trying to keep America safe from a heinous plot involving — what else — Metal Gears.

Both stories are intact from previous releases, complete with weird situations and the occasional awkward moment with Snake.  But, c’mon, it’s Metal Gear, did we really expect anything less?

For the most part, Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater play very well on the Vita.  You’ll have no problem playing through the stealth scenarios, knocking out guards and completing objectives while taking part in epic boss battles, especially through Snake Eater.  However, there is an interesting, and not quite effective, change with inventory controls.  Rather than using your shoulder buttons to switch items, you actually use icons on the touch screen.  It’s hardly a broken system, but we wonder why Konami didn’t include a traditional set-up.  Oh well, it’s still Snake-infused fun.

As for the presentation, Konami has held up its HD end of the bargain rather well.  Though there are times the awkward camera angle or frame rate issue arises, both games look great on the Vita screen, complete with detailed animations and beautiful environments, especially in Snake Eater.  The switch to first-person view is still pretty swift too, though it can be jarring if you’re not prepared for it.  We also like the sound, between the quality Metal Gear voice acting we’ve come to expect (and we mean quality by Metal Gear standards, natch) and great musical cues.  Yes, the “Snake Eater” theme is still intact.  Revel in it.

While Metal Gear Solid HD Collection doesn’t offer the greatest of extras, there are a few worth digging into here.  The VR missions make the trip, as well as the first two MSX Metal Gear games, showing you just how far Snake has come over the years.  Oddly enough, some of the Subsistence pack-ins are missing, along with — yep — Peace Walker.  We honestly would’ve taken that over Sons of Liberty, given the choice.

If you already own Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on a console and can live without taking it on the go, you aren’t missing much.  However, if you’re seeking a stealthy companion for on-the-go play, this package is still quite sufficient, despite missing additives.  The action remains as grandeur as ever, and the presentation didn’t lose much in the transition.  Now if we can just get Konami to work on a few more handheld HD collections.  BUT NOT SILENT HILL.

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified developer remains a mystery, even to Treyarch

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Image

Last week, we got our first few details about Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified, the PlayStation Vita's mysterious take on Activision's popular shooter. We learned that, aside from double colons looking terrible in titles, Black Ops: Declassified "explores original fiction in the Call of Duty Black Ops universe with an all-new campaign of Special Ops missions."

What we didn't learn, however, is who is making the darn thing. We have the title, we have some gameplay details, we even have the box art, but we still don't have the freaking developer. Does anybody know? Not Treyarch, apparently.

Treyarch, who is developing the console and PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, has apparently been kept in the dark about the Vita version.

"I don't know," said Treyarch's Director of Communications John Rafecz when VideoGamer asked him whether his studio or Neversoft were behind the Vita version of Black Ops.

"With regards to the Vita, all I can tell you is that it's quite literally declassified."

I am not 100% certain, but I believe the word he is really looking for is "classified". Unless he does, in fact, know who is developing it.

Rafacz wouldn't confirm whether or not Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 would be coming to the Wii U either, despite the recent Nintendo Gamer article spoiling a November release for the title on Wii U.

"Right now we've announced that the game is coming for 360, PS3 and PC," he said. "Announcements regarding any other SKUs just haven't been made."

Neither Activision nor Nintendo have announced anything regarding a Wii U version of Call of Duty, but Rafacz did admit that "any technology that can enhance the Call of Duty experience is worth considering."

He added: "There's that core Call of Duty experience and that is what fans expects, so anything that helps advance that is worth considering."

Can the Wii U GamePad enhance Call of Duty? Think about how you could launch a predator missile on the tablet controller's screen while watching the big screen to make sure no one sneaks up on you and kills you; that could sure help.

Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified details revealed

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Image

We've got our first bit of info regarding Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified, the new Call of Duty portable experience created exclusively for the PlayStation Vita.  Thanks to a Walmart product listing for Black Ops: Declassified, brought to our attention by NeoGAF, we now know a bit more about what the Vita version will entail - and unfortunately it looks like a more simplified portable experience rather than the full-blown Call of Duty experience we're used to with the console and PC games.

The first thing to note, aside from double colons looking terrible in a game title, is that Black Ops Declassified's story seems as if it will play out as a series of Special Ops missions, rather than your traditional Call of Duty campaign mode. It will explore original fiction from the Call of Duty Black Ops universe and deliver an intense experience that is "optimized for gamers on-the-go".

Of course, this is a Call of Duty game, so it will also have some sort of multiplayer combat that is "tailored for the PS Vita."

Here's the full product listing description:

"Before the future could be won, history had to be written. Exposing that story exclusively on PlayStation Vita, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified explores original fiction in the Call of Duty Black Ops universe with an all-new campaign of Special Ops missions. Optimized for gamers on-the-go, Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified delivers the most intense handheld Call of Duty experience to date, including both Special Ops Story mode and Multiplayer combat tailored for the PS Vita."

Sony briefly mentioned Call of Duty: Black Ops: Declassified for the PlayStation Vita at their E3 press briefing earlier this month, but shared no details or gameplay footage. Call of Duty fans should feel somewhat encouraged; at least the game was important enough for Sony to at least mention during their conference. Outside of Black Ops: Declassified, only PlayStation All-Stars and Assassin's Creed: Liberation were mentioned for the Vita. Apparently, to keep things short, Sony decided to largely ignore their recently launched handheld system.

We have yet to see any gameplay, nor do we know who's developing it or when it will release. However, I do expect it to release near the launch of the console version, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, which is due out on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on November 13th.

The Vita is special too, cries Sony

PS Vita Image

Poor PlayStation Vita, released worldwide just a few months ago and people are already willing to write it off as a failure. With the Wii U coming out and tablets dominating the mobile gaming scene, it's easy to project doom and gloom reports for Vita. One person not ready to throw in the towel is Sony's Scott Rohde who actually believes the Vita's connectivity with the PlayStation 3 offers a better solution to multi-screen gaming than any other console on or coming to the market - including the Wii U.

I know, Nintendo has prided itself on the Wii U GamePad, the system's tablet controller that looks to provide an entirely new way gamers interact with the game and each other. But that doesn't mean the Vita can't do equally special things - even better than the Wii U - argues Rohde.

"Because we have the Vita, I think we can do a lot of special things," the Worldwide Studios vice president told GamesIndustry.

“And remember, that Wii U tablet doesn’t have a processor in it, so it’s got to be fueled by that box sitting under your TV," he added. “We can do some pretty special things that you’ll start to see on the floor this year and you’ll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that’s in your hand as well.”

The big emphasis was on the Vita's cross-platform compatibility with the PlayStation 3. Not only can you take your gaming experience on-the-go, away from the console, but you can even cross-play.

“When you start to see how you can cross over between the two platforms – look at two of the titles that are here at E3, PlayStation All-Stars and Sly 4, for example,” he said.  “Both available on Vita and PS3, and there’s some sort of interactivity across the board. Developers are interested in that kind of stuff.”

Latest reports, as of May, put the Vita at 1.8 million unit sold worldwide.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz

Sega has revealed the trailer for Super Monkey Ball: Banana Splitz, coming exclusively to PlayStation Vita on October 23.

The company hopes to make Banana Splitz "easy to pick up" and "difficult to master," with a gentler difficulty curve for new players in the beginning.

The game supports both local and online multiplayer, a first for the series. It includes eight fan-favorite mini-games, including Monkey Bowling and Monkey Target. A new feature allows players to take pictures of their surroundings and turn them into in-game levels.

Players can use the control sticks or opt to play entirely with tilt.

Sony ignored PS Vita to keep E3 presentation short

PS Vita Image

Remember all of the talks prior to E3 that predicted Sony would place a heavy emphasis on the PlayStation Vita? Outside of a few notable announcements, that didn't happen. Sony largely ignored their new handheld at E3 disappointing many of the system's early adopters.

There was a reason, however. According to Sony's Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, the company didn't detail many of the Vita's upcoming titles because they sought to keep the press conference shorter.

“We had 25 PS Vita games playable on the show floor, some of which are really great titles I’m very excited about,” Sony’s Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida told MCV.

“We could have spent more time talking about those, but we had a very clear intention this year to make the total press conference shorter, because we’re notorious for holding lengthy ones," he added.

“I hope we accomplished that with this year’s conference – which I think lasted about 80 minutes – but from the perspective of people who are waiting for more information on Vita titles, we weren’t able to provide that," he admitted.

To be fair, Sony did announce Assassin's Creed: Liberation and a new Call of Duty title for the Vita, but it surely wasn't enough to appease the masses. With that being said, I still feel Sony had the best E3 presentation - based solely on their PS3 exclusives.

True nightmares are yours to write in Silent Hill: Book of Memories

Konami has publicized an E3 trailer for Silent Hill: Book of Memories, coming to PlayStation Vita this fall.

"You discover that by altering what's written," the trailer's description reads, "you can actually change the past. You can write your own ideal history."

Although the publisher previously told Game Informer that they were aiming for an October release, the video plays it safe and does not confirm an exact date.

Book of Memories has been delayed before, and then again after the unpopular Silent Hill HD Collection released with a slew of problems.

What do you think of the video? Is it what you'd expect from a Silent Hill title, and do you like this approach?

Assassin's Creed III bundles headed to PS3 and Vita this fall

Sony plans to release both a PlayStation 3 bundle with Assassin's Creed III and a PlayStation Vita pack with the recently announced Assassin's Creed III: Liberation on October 30.

The Vita bundle will include a "crystal white" version of the handheld (Wi-fi only, not 3G), the game disc for Liberation, and a 4GB memory card. For PS3, the box will contain a 320GB console and one controller, a copy of Assassin's Creed III, and unspecified exclusive DLC.

“When you link [the games], you will unlock Connor’s tomahawk, an exclusive character skin, a multiplayer character, and a complete upgrade of ammunition pouches,” said Jack Tretton, SCEA’s chief executive.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation takes place in 18th-century Louisiana and stars Aveline, the first-ever female assassin in the series. She must confront the Spanish forces that threaten to invade while the rest of the coastal colonies are battling in the American Revolution. Aveline descends from African and French lineage and uses weapons such as a machete, poison-dart blowpipe, and dueling pistols.

Sony aiming to sell 10 million PlayStation Vitas

Despite the current sales of the PlayStation Vita, Sony plans on selling 10 million units by March of 2013 says SCE CEO Andrew House in an interview with Rueters at E3.“The end-of-year holiday season is extremely important for handheld game consoles,” said House explaining how they would reach the sale of 10 million units.

The top titles being released for the PS Vita are Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation and Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified. As for any other titles that Sony is banking on to get them to 10 million by the end of the year fiscal year, we haven't really seen much. The E3 press conference spent little time on the Vita, focusing more on the PlayStation 3 titles like Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us. Although, House did say that they were going to 'strengthen' the online services of the Vita by adding Youtube and Hulu apps. In conjunction with the Holiday sales Sony believes that the release of the new white PS Vita model will help raise the sales.

Unfortunately, when asked about the next generation of the PlayStation House wouldn't budge.
